Bold grain. Varied patterning. Natural colouring. Renowned durability. All are inspiration and part of the story behind our handcrafted larch wood cutting boards and chopping blocks.
In 2003 a small group of carpenters and wood workers purchased a 14,000 sq. ft. building in the community of Margaree, located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada and Larch Wood Enterprises was established. Initially Larch Wood made flooring products at the facility but after only 2 years in business we realised that we needed to expand our product catalogue.
Knowing that end grain cutting boards were superior to alternative cheaper designs, we decided to craft end grain boards in a variety of sizes, highlighting the distinctive properties, bold and varied grain and natural golden hues of the larch – our classic small, medium and large kitchen cutting boards were born. We gave the first prototype boards to local chefs who used them for approximately 6 months before giving us two thumbs up for the quality, size and design of the boards.
We began marketing our boards in the capital city of Halifax, Nova Scotia with great results and quickly moved on to Toronto, Montreal and into the United States. During our first trade show in Toronto we sold to The Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Gardiner Museum in Toronto; now years later they both remain loyal Larch Wood customers. For more than 10 years, we have had the privilege of being trade partners to the high end Williams-Sonoma kitchenwares and home furnishings chain with locations throughout the US and Canada.
In 2012 we started offering custom made countertops to both private and commercial customers and this has become a growing part of the business and in 2017 we constructed a new workshop dedicated for our custom work. Larch Wood currently employs a talented group of 22 craftspeople and skilled artisans with more than 100 years of combined woodworking experience amongst them. Ingenuity and creativity best describe our crew. Every person who works here contributes to the high quality, precision and care that our products are best known for.
Our trees are locally harvested in a sustainable manner with many trees supplied by small woodlot owners. We pay the woodland owners more than market value for their logs to promote a healthy holistic business.
We feel privileged to live, work and raise our families on Cape Breton Island. Voted one of North America’s top island destinations, Cape Breton continues to inspire visitors with its gorgeous coastline, wonderful natural areas and diverse culture.
Larch Wood Canada is nestled along the Margaree River, renowned for its salmon fishing, and it was designated a Canadian Heritage River in 1998. On our door step is one of the world’s most scenic roads, the Cabot Trail which winds its way through the outstanding Highlands National Park. We invite you to stop in for a tour and to visit our retail space on your next visit to this special part of the planet.
